Alkalinity: Why alkaline water can neutralize acid
Alkaline water from a water ionizer neutralized 177 mg/L more acid than tap water
The chemical property that measures alkaline water’s ability to neutralize acid is called alkalinity (not pH!). Alkalinity is tested by adding acid to an alkali until the pH of the alkali becomes neutral. For example, we tested alkaline water with a pH of 10 against tap water here in Carlsbad (the home of LIFE Ionizers). We used hydrochloric acid with a pH of 2, (similar to stomach acid) and this is what we found:
- Carlsbad tap water (pH of 7.8) neutralized 107 mg/L of acid
- Alkaline water from a LIFE Ionizer (pH of 10) neutralized 284 mg/L of acid
This means that alkaline water from a LIFE Ionizer was able to neutralize more than twice as much acid as Carlsbad city tap water! The acid-neutralizing ability of alkaline water is the reason it has potential to neutralize acid in the body.
Pepsin: The other half of the acid reflux story
Hydrochloric acid is only one half of the acid reflux story. The other half is pepsin, an enzyme that triggers the damage that acid reflux does. Pepsin is not available to the public, so we aren’t able to test it in the lab here at LIFE Ionizers. However, lab tests suggest that alkaline water permanently neutralizes pepsin.
Can alkaline water help your acid reflux?
You should talk to your doctor to find out for sure. Keep in mind that alkaline water’s acid- and pepsin-neutralizing capabilities have been demonstrated in laboratory conditions. Clinical testing hasn’t been done yet.
LIFE Ionizers is very interested in assessing the effects of alkaline water on acid reflux. If you are clinically diagnosed as an acid reflux sufferer, we may be able to offer you a special deal on a LIFE Alkaline Water Ionizer in return for your co-operation in our ongoing study of alkaline water for acid reflux.
