Alkaline Water Weight Loss Study: 12 Lbs in 2 Months

Alkaline water has become popular as the beverage of choice for weight loss and detoxification, and now a 2011 study documents these benefits of drinking alkaline water made by a water ionizer. The study, called The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report. is the first serious, clinical research performed on the benefits of alkaline water for weight loss, detoxification, and blood pressure.

How the study was done

Study participants did not change their diets, just their water

The study examined 4 obese individuals. Each of them got a complete clinical exam that was given before starting to drink alkaline water. The study subjects were then reevaluated at 1 month and 2 months to determine what effect the alkaline water had on them.

Researchers measured

  • Body weight

  • blood lipid profile (cholesterol)

  • Hydration status

  • The amount of nutrients and toxins in their blood and urine

  • Antioxidant status

  • Bone Loss markers

  • Some hormone levels

As you can see, the researchers gathered a very large amount of clinical data!. The average age of the study participants was 52.5 years. The participant’s weights ranged from 233 lbs to 274 lbs. at the start of the study. Their BMI ranged from 33 to 50, so all of these study participants met the clinical definition of obesity (BMI > 30).

Weight Loss from Alkaline Water

At the beginning of the study, the average weight of the 4 participants was 255 Lbs. After one month, participants’ average weight had dropped to 249 lbs. After two months, study participants average weight was 243 lbs, for an average of 12 lbs lost after two months of alkaline water. Study participants made no changes to their diet other than consuming alkaline water.

Study participants drank alkaline water with a pH of 10.2 – 10.6 during the study, no side effects were reported. The study was conducted in Hendersonville NC, using filtered, electrolyzed water made from local tap water.  Hendersonville has fairly soft water, with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of 30 parts per million. This is very low mineral content for tap water!

Alkaline Water Detoxification from Heavy Metals

Researchers monitored the urine of the test subjects as they began drinking alkaline water and observed that the levels of heavy metals in their urine increased in the first few days after they started drinking alkaline water. These heavy metals were being drawn out of the study participant’s tissues. The only metal found in Hendersonville NC tap water is copper (0.09 mg/L). This lead the researchers conducting the study to conclude that alkaline water was helping detoxify study participants’ bodies of heavy metals. Previous articles on this blog have reviewed other studies that show alkaline water may protect against the toxic effects of mercury.

Can alkaline water help you lose weight?

Maybe, keep in mind that everybody’s bodies are different, even among the 4 study participants, some lost more weight than others. All four study participants did lose weight, and saw other improvements as well.
