What Happens to Water When it is Ionized?

When water in a water ionizer is ionized, it is split into two separate streams of water. One of those streams is alkaline, the other one is acidic. Why two streams of water? Because of the physics behind the ionization process. A water ionizer doesn’t add anything to water when it ionizes it, instead, the ionization process changes the composition of the mineral compounds in the water.

What water is like before it is ionized

The ionization process affects the dissolved mineral salts in water, not on the actual water molecules themselves.  Tap water contains dissolved mineral salts, mostly calcium carbonates and magnesium carbonates. Those two mineral salts are responsible for the white deposits left on plumbing and appliances in homes with hard water. In general, water that contains greater than 60 milligrams per liter of those salts is considered to be moderately hard water Most homes in the US are served by water supplies that are moderately hard, or harder. Hard water is safe to drink, in fact, it is better for your health than soft water. According to the World Health Organization, you need to get between 10 – 20% of your daily needs for calcium and magnesium from your drinking water. So hard water is good for your health, but if it’s very hard, your water can taste chalky.

What happens to water when it’s ionized

The ionization process splits the mineral salts in tap water in half: The calcium and magnesium are split from the carbonate that they were combined with. Next, the calcium and magnesium ions are drawn through a special ion-permeable membrane into a separate chamber. Likewise, the carbonate ions are also drawn through the ion permeable membrane into their own separate chamber.

Alkaline water: After being separated from the carbonate ions, the calcium and magnesium ions pull hydroxyl ions from the water around them to form new mineral salts: Calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These newly formed hydroxide salts are highly alkaline, they are what gives alkaline water its high alkaline pH. The hydroxyl ions give the alkaline water its age-defying antioxidant potential.

Acidic water: When the carbonate ions enter their chamber, they also react with water molecules. The reaction produces a solution of carbonic acid. It’s a very weak solution, that is useful as a beauty rinse, for watering plants, and for sanitizing produce.

Is bottled alkaline water the same as ionized alkaline water?

No. In fact, many bottled alkaline waters aren’t even alkaline! Tests done on some popular brands such as Trader Joe’s bottled alkaline water actually showed that those brands could actually be acidic. The problem is that alkaline water doesn’t keep if you put it into a bottle, you have to drink it within 24 hours of making it to get the water’s full potency. Even if it has an alkaline pH, bottled alkaline water doesn’t have any antioxidant potential, and that antioxidant potential is responsible for many of the health benefits that you drink alkaline water for.

The only way to get the full benefit of drinking alkaline water is to make it yourself, with a water ionizer. Consider this: You need to drink 2 – 3 liters of water per day for good health. Magnesium in Alkaline Water best for Bone Health

Doctors often tell their patients to increase their calcium intake to maintain strong bones, often suggesting milk or other calcium rich foods.


But a recent study from Norway suggests they may be missing something: Magnesium. The study showed that in Norway, bone fracture risk is lower in people who drink magnesium-rich water with an alkaline pH. Interestingly, the study showed no association between calcium levels in water and bone fracture risk possibly because Norwegians get adequate calcium from their diets.

Overall, men saw a nearly 20% reduction in bone fracture risk, and women saw an average of 18% reduction in bone fracture risk.

You are the pH you drink: The study showed that water pH matters because if affects what your body absorbs. People who drank water with an alkaline pH showed higher levels of calcium and magnesium, while people who drank acidic water had higher levels of harmful minerals like mercury. Earlier research done in Sweden even suggested that drinking alkaline water could protect you from mercury’s harmful effects.

Multiple studies have shown that drinking alkaline water lowers markers of bone loss, and that it encourages the growth of healthy new bone. Alkaline Water Machines – Fact or Fiction?

After a water ionizer separates the minerals from the carbonates in tap water, the minerals react with water to achieve chemical equilibrium – a state where the atomic charges of the minerals are balanced out by negatively charged molecules taken from water molecules. Alkaline water benefits have been studied

Get Antioxidants from Alkaline Ionized Water


Alkaline water produced by a water ionizer can be a great source of antioxidants and other minerals.   • Alkaline water for mineral nutrition

Calcium and Magnesium: Essential dietary minerals calcium and magnesium are 30% easier for your body to absorb from water than they are from food.   • Alkaline water and hydration

pH is the key: Research has shown that the primary way that water passes into and out of cells is through tiny channels in the cell wall called aquaporins. Gradual Relief: Alkaline water for digestive health has been studied mostly in Japan and Korea. Clinical trials of alkaline water in Japan for digestive upset revealed that 88% of people with chronic digestive upset found partial or full relief of their symptoms.

Limitation: researchers noted that relief from symptoms happened gradually, and the best results were in cases of minor digestive upset. This means there is no guarantee of immediate relief! For fast relief of upset stomach, take medicine!

  • Alkaline water research is ongoing

The studies referenced in this article represent the strongest proof yet of the benefits of alkaline water. However, most of this research is preliminary; it needs to be backed up with further research.

However, the health benefits of the mineral hydroxides in alkaline water are well documented. There is plenty of research that demonstrates that alkaline water does contribute to body nutrition. It is also well-documented that alkaline water from a water ionizer tastes better than plain water.

Alkaline Water Detoxification proven by Study

A 2011 study on the effects of drinking alkaline water reveals that drinking alkaline water can provide detoxification of heavy metals from your body. The study evaluated 4 people who consumed alkaline water for 2 months. Researchers monitored test subjects urine before and during the time they drank alkaline water. All four test subjects showed an increase in the levels of heavy metals detected in their urine for the first couple of days when they started drinking alkaline water. The study made alkaline water using a water ionizer and tap water from Hendersonville, NC. According to their annual water quality report, Hendersonville’s tap water shows only a small amount of copper in it (0.09 mg/L). So the heavy metals excreted by the test subjects definitely didn’t come from Hendersonville’s water!

This study was conducted on 4 middle-aged people (average age 52.5 years) who were clinically obese (average weight = 255 Lbs, and Body Mass Index average 39.75). All four study participants lost weight, an average of 12 pounds during this study. How Alkaline Water Helps Fight Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome Linked to low urine pH

As urine pH decreases, the number of metabolic syndrome symptoms increase

Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of modern day physiological screw-ups, it is considered to be a factor in obesity,  hypertension and  kidney stones.

A large, recently completed study has documented an important new finding in the fight against metabolic syndrome – sufferers also have low urinary pH. People with low urine pH often have higher amounts of calcium in their urine, which significantly increases their risk of developing kidney stones.

The above chart shows clearly that as urine pH gets lower, the number of metabolic syndrome symptoms increases. People with very low urine pH have a higher risk of obesity, kidney stones, and other problems. [3]

Other studies have also shown that low urinary pH levels are associated with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI), the standard medical measure used to determine if a person is obese. The reason that low urinary pH is associated with obesity is not fully understood, and studies are ongoing. While alkaline water’s effect on metabolic syndrome has yet to be studied; it is well known that alkaline water raises urine pH, [1] which may offer relief for metabolic syndrome sufferers.

Low Urinary pH is a Symptom of Metabolic Acidosis

Medical experts have long associated low urinary pH with metabolic acidosis, a condition in which the body has to tax its vital resources in order to compensate for excess acidity in the diet. One of the ways the body protects itself from metabolic acidosis is to rid itself of excess acid through the kidneys. Because of this, one of the symptoms of metabolic acidosis that doctors look for is low urinary pH.

Metabolic acidosis carries many of the same health risks as metabolic syndrome; obesity, high blood pressure and high blood sugar counts are commonly seen in both diseases. While the two diseases have yet to be linked by medical science, the common factor in both diseases of low urinary pH suggests that more research should be done.

Study Shows Alkaline Water raises Urine pH

Studies done on alkaline water show that it raises urine pH, and some medical experts consider it to be an effective way to counter the effects of metabolic acidosis. A study published in 2010 compared the urine pH of people given alkaline water to a control group that drank water that had close to a neutral pH.

Testing showed that the group that drank alkaline water had higher blood and urine pH levels than the group that drank the pH neutral water. The group that drank alkaline water saw an average increase in their urinary pH from 7.52 – 7.69, an increase of .17 pH. Because the pH scale is logarithmic, the .17 pH change means drinking alkaline water made the test subjects urine pH 1.7 times more alkaline [1]

Benefits of using Alkaline Water to Raise Urine pH

Based on the chart above, a urine has a pH of above 6.1 pH is associated with zero symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Thus a person who can raise their urinary pH may be able to prevent the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Research shows that low urinary pH is associated with a higher risk of forming kidney stones, thus increasing the urinary pH may help prevent kidney stones. Kidney stones are calcium deposits in the kidneys, which are believed to form because of excessive excretion of calcium in the urine. [1]

Raising the pH of your urine improves the ability of your kidneys to remove toxins from your bloodstream. This is why doctors treating poisoning victims will use a bicarbonate IV drip; it temporarily raises the person’s urine pH. This is why alkaline water is used for detoxification.

People with higher urine pH may also be better hydrated. The study quoted above that showed that drinking alkaline water increases urine pH also showed that alkaline water drinkers appear to retain more of the water they drank than people who drink water with a neutral or acidic pH. [2]

How can I know its working?

The best way to find out if it is working is to test your urine pH before you start drinking alkaline water, and then keep testing after you start drinking alkaline water and compare the results. The best time to test your urine is when you get up in the morning.

Keep in mind your urine pH level will vary from day to day. The best way to track your progress is to compare your average urine pH level from week to week. You will know that alkaline water is raising your urine pH if you see your average urinary pH gradually rise from where it started.

How much Water is used to make our everyday things?

Very few people concern themselves with water, as long as the tap runs when they turn it on, what’s there to worry about? Unfortunately, there is a lot to worry about, it takes a lot more water than you might think to make the things most people take for granted. Even worse, it the problem of what to do with the water left over after it has been used, many agricultural and manufacturing processes turn perfectly good drinking water into a toxic stew. This article looks at how much water it takes to make things, and what happens to the water afterward.


Many oil companies use a method called “fracking” to fracture underground rock formations called shale so they can release pockets of trapped methane gas. The process requires about 2 million gallons of drinking water that is taken from the local community where the well is that is being fracked. The water is mixed with toxic chemicals, so after the well has been fracked, the water that is recovered is toxic and must be disposed of. Fracking leads to serious environmental consequences, (such as flammable tap water) which are discussed in an earlier post on this blog.

Bottled Water

Water is used to make the bottle as well as fill it; it takes 1.5 gallons of water just to make the bottle. Manufacturing plastic takes a lot of water, to make one pound of plastic, it takes 24 gallons of water. Many plastic manufacturers try to reuse some of their water, but the water that is discharged often has dangerous chemicals in it, and small bits of plastic. In the environment, animals eat the small pieces of plastic, which then fill their stomachs, and then they starve to death.

Pair of Jeans

To grow enough cotton to make a pair of jeans, it takes 1,800 gallons of water. Water used to grow cotton returns to the environment laden with fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. The tainted water has devastating consequences of the environment. Many species have been driven to the point of extinction from the byproducts of cotton production. Toxic DDT (now outlawed) was a popular pesticide used on cotton.


It takes an astonishing amount, 2847 gallons to make a single serving of chocolate. Thankfully, chocolate can be made responsibly and much of the water used to grow the cacao beans can be returned to the environment for reuse if the chocolate is grown using sustainable methods of agriculture. Unfortunately, much of the chocolate that is produced is not grown using sustainable methods, and the resulting water pollution contaminates drinking water wells in the third-world countries where most chocolate is grown.

A Human

About 70% of our bodies are made of water. A person should drink about 6 – 8 glasses of water a day to remain hydrated. Most of the water used by people is recycled, and safely returned to the environment. The problem is, that many of the other activities that use water end up poisoning it, and because of that, poisoning people. Clean water is something most of us take for granted, but the reality of the situation is that much of our water isn’t clean.
